All Terrain Tour 2024: Madoc Quartet is Coming your Way

Updated: Aug 4

QSCM's ALL TERRAIN TOUR just keeps getting better!

QSCM's ALL TERRRAIN TOUR 2024 features the Madoc Quartet: 4 outstanding Canadian string players presenting traditional and new music for string quartet. Led by Madoc's own Sebastian Sallans, MQ launches the tour at 7 p.m. on Thursday August 29, Hazzards Corners Church. On the program: Mozart's String Quartet No. 20 in D Major, known as "The Hoffmeister". Franz Anton Hoffmeister was a Viennese lawyer composer in his own right, also the patron, publisher and friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

It is said that Mozart wrote the quartet for his dear friend, Hoffmeister. That makes it an exellent start to the All Terrain Tour. Chamber Music is music written by friends for friends and QSCM is all about making that experience open to everyone! The "Hoffmeister" has four movements - think of "movements" in classical music like the four installments of a Netflix mini-series. But this is one you get to binge-watch LIVE at Hazzards Corners Thursday (Aug 29) at 7 p.m. There will be cookies!

Thursday at Hazzards is just the beginning. On FRIDAY join MQ at FINA VISTA FARM. Fina Vista is on Tuftsville Road, just outside of Stirling. This is QSCM's "Happy Hour" event. Headlining, we are excited to present music by two North American women writing the musi of our time: Afro-American Jessie Montgomery, and Canadian Jocelyn Morlock.

Montgomery's work is rooted in her formative cultural experience growing up in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Add in her professional training as a violinist at the Juilliard School, expand the scope with Montgomery's academic work earning a master's degree in Composition for Film and Multimedia at New York University and you've got music that cooks the American experience into something vibrant, alive and unforgettable. Montgomery's music is both "classical" and yet "vernacular". The classical part - that means disciplined and refined in expression. Vernacular, means "of the people". It refers among other things to the improvisational aspects of Mongomery's expression. But if you really want to understand what all these words mean, come and hear the music! Friday, August 30, 4 p.m. Fina Vista Farm.

The music of Canadian composer Patricia Morehead completes the The "Happy Hour" program at Fina Vista. Sebastian met Patricia while a performance student at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. He went on to perform her music in a variety of contexts and remains excited not only about her writing, but the opportunities for collaboration between composer and musician she continues to offer him. Her music is described as "employ(ing) a palette of sounds and structures that entice the ear and seduce the mind." Come out Friday to Fina Vista Farm to find out how! Enjoy a mocktail while you listen, then get ready to follow the Madoc Quartet to Moria Hall, just down the road. From Moira Hall is less than ten minutes of driving from Fina Vista. Get there by 7 pm for a sweet treat of lush string effects and rhythmic exhuberance. MQ present's Dvorak's "American" Quartet. Yes: It's all happening on the same day - Friday, Aug 30, 7 pm at Moira Hall.

Settle in for a whirlwind tour of the music that changed the way North Americans thought about and wrote classical music. That is what musicologists say about Dvorak's "American" - the String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96. The musicians of the Madoc Quartet are going to show you why. Conversation with the musicians over dessert and coffee, will follow.

It doesn't end there! We encourage eveyrone to attend all four installments of the All Terrain Tour. Thursday and Friday's events give you the chance to meet the music and the musicians, to learn more about what makes it work and to become familiar with the music from the perspective of a performer. Listen discuss, listen some more. Then Sunday, Sept 1 at Arts Centre Hastings, you have the chance to greet both the Music and the Musicians as old friends. We come together again to hear all of the music in full concert format! It's kind of like having the chance to be in the kitchen while the chef prepares a four course meal, before sitting down to the table for the full dining experience. Enjoy tasting and experimenting before the dinner, help choose the wine and discuss the components of the meal with the chef. But you don't want to miss the meal!

That's 4 p.m. Sunday, Sunday, September 1 at Arts Centre Hastings, Madoc for the grand finale as QSCM's All Terrain Tour 2024 culminates in a full concert event. All of the music: Mozart, Dvorak, Montgomery and Morlock, the Madoc Quartet, and you: Is there a better way to finish? Last year, the ATT Final Concert filled Arts Centre Hastings beyond capacity. Some people came just for the final concert - they were astonished and enthralled. Those who enjoyed the 3 events leading up to this finale expressed delight and excitement as the recognized the music. Some even said if they couldn't actually sing along, they certainly felt like they wanted to!
