Classical Pirate! What does it mean?

This image is of REM Island, a platform off the coast of Holland. It was taken over for use as a "pirate" radio station in 1964.

"Pirate Radio" refers to radio stations broadcasting without a radio license.

No worries: QSCM's "Classical Pirate Radio program is not operating illegally! "Classical Pirate" comes to you by way of Loyalist College Radio (91.3 on your FM dial) and on demand at Sound Cloud. https://soundcloud.com/user-163878073/sets/classical-pirate-radio

"Classical Pirate Radio" was born late in the summer of 2023 when QSCM was approached to take over Loyalist College Radio's Monday night classical music program. A brainstorming session produced the name "Classical Pirate" because, while we are not broadcasting illegally, QSCM's Classical Pirate hosts are curating music that colours outside, as well as inside the lines of what is expected when the programming subtitle, includes the words, "Classical Music"

"Making Classical Music new, and New Music Classical:" With this motto governing the play list, the Classical Pirate Team led by Cynthia Young (ARCT teacher and performer) delivers carefully curated programs that include discussion about the music, the musicians that make it and -- well, listen in and see for yourself! Classical Pirate's hosts includes QSCM's Artistic Director, violinist Sebastian Sallans, (BA Violin Performance, University of Toronto) and singer/pianist Sharon Wickett (ARCT voice and piano.) The guest roster features some of of Canada's finest - performers and composers.

Tune in, Monday Nights 10 to 12 pm. for broadcast. Listen on demand at SoundCloud.com You don't have to miss a beat: all programs are archived and available anytime. Listen, enjoy, and I invite you to join the QSCM website as a member and leave a comment here about your experience. Be great to hear your thoughts!

So why do you call it "pirate radio" if it's a licensed station?
