QSCM wishes everyone the best of times for holidays and all happiness in the new year. I wanted to share a Holiday Greeting with you all that would point everyone in the direction of joyous holiday music and so immedilately googled "Christmas Music." That took me here:
"Classicfm" web site is always a great go-to for play lists and commentary on classical music that are informative, accurate and interesting.
But then I almost equally immediately thought of all my friends, all the people I've known in my life who did not grow up as I did, in the kind of community that I knew as a child, experiencing with the cultural traditions that shaped my holiday expectations, Not everyone celebrates the holidays as "Christmas." Google's response to my musings on classial music in the context of thinking about all my friends, and not just those who grew up in families that look act like mine at Christmas time, brought me to a piece of writing that concludes with this observation:
"Classical music is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the beauty that arises from blending different traditions. By exploring and embracing these diverse influences, classical music not only honours its rich heritage but also continues to grow and inspire future generations. As we celebrate this diversity, we recognize that the true essence of classical music lies in its ability to transcend boundaries, bringing people together through the universal language of sound."
I couldn't have said it better myself! And under the title "Celebrating Diversity in Classical Music: Exploring Different Cultural Influences" this source also offers links to listening guides and discussion of all things music. I will be exploring it further in a quiet holiday moment: I invite you to join me!
However you spend your holidays, I hope you have a great time. If you are among those who find the festive season challenging for whatever reasons, I wish that this year you are able to enjoy some comfort in whatever way is best for you. However you spend the weeks in December given over to decorative extravagance, gustatory indulgence and the sharing of gifts in the context of getting together with family and friends, I do hope you can find many moments where you feel loved, appreciated and content with sheer fact that you are, we all are, alive and able to share beauty. If you're reading this, that means you do love great music and I look forward to seeing you all in 2025 when QSCM brings you exactly that!
